History:
Wikipedia of the historical figure that Sanada Yukimura is based on and reincarnated from.
(The following sections of history are what is given in the manga. Though it may contain elements of the true Yukimura Sanada's history, the lack of any information provided on his former life is simply because it was not provided in story. Please use the in-depth wiki-link above to get more information on his previous life.
Additionally, I will refer to him as Sanada, his last name, in texts, as his preferred first name is different than his real first name.)
Sanada runs a nursery school, and is often made fun of by the children there for a variety of reasons, such as his clumsiness and his glasses. The girls in his class seem to be against bullying him, while the boys are in favour of bullying him. While Sanada tries to cease their fighting, his voice ultimately fails to quell theirs. Overall, though, the children do seem to really like their teacher.
As he sees the students off, he realizes the arrival of the group of Urashichiken – Hana, Chikahito, Sakura, and Tachibana. He heads back into the school building, and suddenly the group is enshrouded in darkness. They try to realise where it came from, wondering if it is Sanada, but someone confirms it isn’t him. Sanada then steps through the darkness, asking what the groups wants of him in a rather shaky tone. The group was seeking him out to deliver a message from their leader, Hidetsugu Toyotomi, of the Demon Lord of the Sixth Heaven and of Nobunaga, and talking about Iemitsu’s desire to kill people and obtain their Oni to meet this end.
Sakura delivers the message that Iemitsu’s plans do not leave Sanada excluded from the chain of events, and proceeds to point out that Sanada is probably aware of who they already are and of all of this information, and calls him Sanada Yukimura.
Sanada uses the name Yukimura to obscure his true identity, and distinctly points this out when the Urashichiken call him Yukimura. Which Sakura apologises and says that the name Yukimura is more well-known. Sanada then presses Sakura to continue with his message. The answer is that Hidetsugu does not wish to fight against Sanada, and in fact is actually asking for his alliance. Though, they suspect he might turn it down because Sanada has had a bitter experience before with the Toyotomi. Although Sanada says that is something he chose himself, and that he has never regretted it even once.
The historical figure of Sanada Genjirou Yukimura had, during the summer campaign of the Seige of Oosaka, met his death due to the Toyotomi. As Chikahito makes this statement, recalling history, Sanada observes him for a moment.
Although Sanada understands the situation, he says that words alone will not cause him to join the Urashichiken’s cause, and he puts up a retaliation front by summoning the Ten Braves Ninja who serve him. It is confirmed that the darkness that enshrouds them is actually caused by one of the Braves, Saizou.
He makes the statement to fight against the Urashichiken, declaring he will not serve the weak. However, he also says that he will not fight against Hana. Perhaps this is because of her ability to copy others’ abilities. So he makes the statement of which of the other two will fight him, of Sakura or Tachibana, and excludes Chikahito from the list of options as well. Without waiting for an answer, he strikes Sakura, displaying incredible speed and strength, surprising the other man because of his deceiving appearance.
Sakura then tries to go on the offensive against him, but he’s able to deflect this attacks just as quickly and easily, not even breaking a sweat. When he realizes Sakura isn’t holding back, he says that he won’t either, then. Tachibana says that this means if Sakura doesn’t bring Sanada down with one blow, he will surely lose. Sanada removes his glasses and summons a wolf-like Oni. He fuses with the Oni, which alters his appearance and ultimately boosts his strength.
He takes on some of the features of the wolf, bearing its markings, growing large and furry ears, claws, and tail, and also a horn in the middle of his head. His eyes change colour as well. This seems to be the moment the Ten Braves were waiting for in the combat, as they cheer him on. He proceeds to attack Sakura with his improved strength, making the other man fall to the ground and cough. Sakura tells Tachibana to give him his Solar Weapon, or else he can’t hope to stand a chance against Sanaba’s strongest member. Sakura is a Lunar wielder, and this causes visible concern for Tachibana, who yields to the request anyway in order to let Sakura fuse with it and be able to face against Sanaba.
Sakura then says that Sanaba likes fighting to the death. When he attacks, it’s unleashed against the enshrouding darkness and ends up hurting Saizou as he tries to maintain the barrier. When the other Braves worry about Saizou, Saizou demands that they not take their eyes off of Sanada. In actuality, though, Sanada is watching over Saizou and ensuring his safety, even though Saizou is the one being struck by Sakura’s attacks.
After Saizou is struck twice, Sanada summons flames and turns them into a blade to strike against Sakura. He attacks the weapon that Sakura borrowed from Tachibana, which by extension damages Tachibana as well. By Sakura’s demand to end it, Sanada impales Sakura with the flame-blade. Sakura says if he hadn’t let Sanada impale him, then Sanada wouldn’t have calmed down.
The Braves rush to Sanada’s side. But one of the Braves commands the others not move, since Sanada has yet to make a conclusion. It is then revealed that Sanada has been pierced through by Sakura’s attack to the shoulder. They both launch back from each other. At this time, Sanaba separates from his Oni. He collapses into the arms of the Braves, and is cuddled by Engetsu. Sakura collapses completely, passing out. With that, Sanada says the time has come to move to another place for the next battle. This seems to be the confirmation that Sanada will side with Hidetsugu. Thankfully, it seems that Sakura and Tachibana are able to make full recoveries later.
The next time we see Sanada, it seems he lets Engetsu run freely. It is stated that Engetsu is often by his side like this. Of course, since Engetsu is an Oni, he is not seen by normal people. Sanada also says that Engetsu’s activity means that Iemitsu is on the move.
When Engetsu knocks Chikahito to the ground, he’s chasing after the Oni saying he can’t do that. He appears to be much more friendly, as he smiles and gives a good morning to Hana, petting Engetsu. He has moved to Kyoto from Osaka to be closer to the Urashichiken, under a contract with Hidetsugu. Then he flashes another smile, apologizing for Engetsu’s behaviour.
He’s been moved to a new kindergarten as a result of moving to Kyoto. He says that the children are all wonderfully kind, but it’s revealed that they pick on him just as much as the preschoolers did, such as by taping ‘Klutz’ signs to his back.
During a session in which he is crafting masks for the children, it is when Sasuke and Saizou are there to bring him news about one of Nobunaga’s Oni. And it seems to be that they were followed by this said Oni. As they are enshrouded by the circle of darkness, Sanada swears to overcome the Oni, in order to protect the two with him. Saizou, moved by his words, promises to work harder to protect him.
When the owner of the Oni steps out from the shadows, he says "It's been awhile; Or, I wish I could say that," as Sasuke and Saizou move in front of him to protect him. The attackers are Ishida Mitsunari and Shima Sakon. Sanada uses -dono to refer to them, denoting a level of respect, despite the seemingly bitter familiarity with them. They are approaching him because of his contract with Hidetsugu.
He states that he is, indeed, siding with the Toyotomi in this life as well. When asked if it is so, even for a lost cause, Sanada answers that 'There is no battle whose outcome is decided before it begins.' He says he believed that, even back in the Siege of Osaka. He believed that they would win.
Ishida tells Sanada that this time he will side with the Tokugawa, which surprises Sanada. With that, Ishida and Shima leave. Saizou complains that if Ishida was treating Sanada as a subordinate just now that he will not be forgiven for it, but Sanada says that Ishida is not that sort of person. Although he doesn't know why Ishida has chosen to side with the Tokugawa, he is confident they will figure it out later, if engaged in combat with him.
While on standby mode, he continues to work in the kindergarten and Hana volunteers frequently to help him out with the crafts and children. Hana says she loves Sanada's drawing designs and has alot of fun helping with the children.
The Ten Braves are particularly fond of Sanada, perhaps even to the point of having a crush on him, as exampled by when two of the braves catch Chikahito going on about how amazing Sanada seems to be, they tell him that he can't go falling for Sanada unless he wants to face against all of the Braves. As they continue teasing him, Sanada tells them to stop because Chikahito has to go to school and can't be late.
As Chikahito runs off, he asks Hana if Chikahito has changed or if he's the same as before. Hana says either doesn't matter, it's the fact that he came that she is satisfied.
When the kids are taking their naps, Sanada converses with Hana while she makes flowers. Hard as he tries, his never come out well, but hers come out beautifully. He thanks her for her hard work. Hana says that she thinks Sanada's flowers are cute, though. He follows up with a story about how he showed his work to the Braves and they all turned away trembling from it. When Saizou saw them, he became angry, and Sasuke ended up rolling on the floor while laughing.
As he's talking about them, Saizou and Sasuke show up. They tell Sanada that all of the necessary documents are gathered and everything is ready. Sanada, very seriously, tells Saizou not to neglect his main job as a lawyer, because they are Sanada's most valuable sources of income. At this point, it is revealed that Sanada was (at least) once under house arrest, and thus was hardpressed for money. And, as a result, is now extremely thrifty. They couldn't even afford his favourite alcohol, called Shochu, a Japanese drink similar to vodka, and thus the Braves had to work really hard at part-time jobs to save up. Sanada then declares that there is nothing wrong with frugality.
When an enclosure is detected nearby, at Chikahito's school, Sanada sends Sasuke and Saizou with Hana to go help him. As it would turn out, it's Ishida and Shima that are attacking Chikahito. However, with their limited skills, the sister of the villain, Iemitsu, says that it makes Sanada look like a much better asset than the two of them. Iemitsu then quickly shushes her, asking Ishida and Shima if they were able to assess Hana's fighting ability. It would seem that Iemitsu is manipulating Shima and Ishida to bend to his will and serve under him. And Ishida claims that he will make Dairokutenmaou, perhaps an Oni, his.
Unfortunately, this is the final chapter before the series is permanently hiatused.
Personality:
When first met, Sanada gives the impression of a klutzy, pushover teacher. He doesn’t like it when the children fight, and seemingly does his best to speak out against it, only to be shushed by the students while they continue to argue over bullying him. In which, Sanada seems almost at a loss on what to do except let them continue as he gives failed interventions. Ultimately, Sanada is viewed as very passive.
However, Sanada is actually remarkably observant, such as noticing the Urashichiken approaching him before they even reach the school premises. Although he initially approaches them shakily, he does enshroud them in a consuming darkness before doing so. He also realizes the situation after observing Chikahito for a moment based on his historical statements, perhaps seeing Chikahito’s unique presence. He also says he knew that the Urashichiken would come to him, and thus made preparations for such an event.
As Sakura begins to discuss the reason for their approach, particularly when Sakura calls him Yukimura, he says that his name is actually Nobushige, and Yukimura is a guise to cover his identity. It’s at this point that Chikahito notices that Sanada’s personality has changed quite strongly. He seems much more serious and calculating. Nothing like the pushover façade he has around the students. Sanada presses Sakura to continue with his explanation.
When the Urashichiken wonder if he might not join because of a previous conflict with the Toyotomi, he displays that he can make a bold decision, saying that he chose it himself and never regrets the decision he made. With that, he summons figures from the darkness to attack the Urashichiken, saying that words alone will not make him submit to their side. He says that his family has no intention of serving the weak in this life.
He gives an incredible display that the passive, meek personality is only a façade, and shows that he is actually incredibly skilled, strong, and intense as he is willing to fight and strikes without hesitation against the Urashichiken. When he notices that Sakura isn’t holding back, he has zero problem with going full strength against the other man and summoning his Oni to give him more strength than before. Even though he still ends up stronger than Sakura, he ultimately decides to side with the Urashichiken after Sakura lands a strong blow on him. He gives a calm demeanour, neither concerned nor hindered about Sakura’s collapse and defeat.
He returns to his usual, if not happier, demeanour after moving to Kyoto per contract with Hidetsugu. He seems to enjoy the students and believes they’re all good children, even if he is seemingly (pretending to be) oblivious to all of their teasing. He even gives apologies to Chikahito for Engetsu’s behaviour and tries to reel Engetsu in. Whether or not all of this is sincere, it definitely comes off as such. He makes himself easy to get along with, and once he makes a decision it becomes virtually unable to be altered otherwise. So, suffice it to say if he has made the decision to get along with someone, he probably genuinely does get along with them.
He buries himself deep in effort when it comes to children, such as making masks for them. Although Sasuke, one of the Braves, says he’s making it too complicated and says that the masks are too difficult to tell, it still seems pretty obvious what he’s making. (Although, even Saizou gets it wrong.) So, supposedly his crafting skills aren’t on par, and are even hardly recognizable, even if it’s totally obvious to us readers. Also, he apparently doesn’t know how to use a cell phone, or so he claims.
He sticks by his beliefs and his word without hesitation. No matter what he does, he does so with his all. If he's in a contract, he is loyal. If he believes that he has a chance in combat, then he will not back down from it. All of his true actions are never wavering.
Despite his serious demeanour, he can be taken aback, though it seems to take alot if he isn't in his façade. Such as when Ishida said that he was siding with the enemy, Sanada was surprised, even startled by the statement. Though, he still defends Ishida's honour after he leaves, saying that the man has always been fastidious in his mind for justice. He doesn't seem to fault him for siding with Tokugawa. What's surprising to him is that he knows that Ishida thought highly of the Toyotomi's cause until the end. His reasons for siding with Tokugawa are not known to him, though he is certain he will find out if they end up fighting down the line.
Sanada can also be shown having a very strict temper, though it takes a certain set of circumstances to enact this as well. Our primary example is when he's in the kindergarten and, after Ishida and Shima leave, he yells at Sasuke and Saizou for having shoes on in the classroom because he mops the floor himself. This shows that if his efforts are trampled on, he won't take very kindly to it. He'll even bark commands over it, telling others to fix what they messed up.
He's always grateful for Hana's help and the other Urashichiken's kindnesses, such as when Sakura makes foods for them and sends them with Hana to deliver. When he stops the other Braves from bullying Chikahito so he can go to school, he gives a smile and tells him to have a safe trip. When Chikahito is later threatened, he commands two of his Braves to go assist Hana in saving Chikahito.
Abilities:
Summon – Able to summon the Ten Braves to come to his aid. These are a group of ninja that served him in his previous life. He can also do this with his Oni, Engetsu.
Speed – Displays an ability to rapidly move and strike his opponents. He’s also able to defend against attacks using this with his strength.
Strength – Despite his small stature, he’s actually incredibly strong with his bare hands alone. This enables him to surprise and injure his opponents with equal force.
Fuse – Can combine with Engetsu, which alters his appearance and boosts his abilities.
Fire – An ability gained by fusing with Engetsu. Allows Sanada to use flames and alter them into weaponry as an extension upon himself (i.e. the flames turn into a sword attached to his arm).
Sensing - Like all of the others, he can sense shifts, such as when another has been enclosed into a darkness circle, and may even be able to detect who it is or where it is with depending factors.
Strengths:
Intensely serious
Loyal
Protective
Observant
Decisive
Weaknesses:
Deceiving
Combat-inclined to the point of death
Frugal
Demanding of standards
Unrepentant
God/Shinki: Shinki
Why?: Even though he is the leader of a ninja clan, he goes very much out of his way to be low-key, giving a very passive impression unless otherwise engaged in combat. And, even when engaged in combat, he has every intention of keeping his clan safe, as if he were there to defend them instead of them defending him. He makes sure none of them are in over their heads, and is quick to step before them if they are.
Cause Of Death: Defending Sasuke and Saizou from an attack by Iemitsu turned out to be a trap to get Sanada's Oni, Engetsu. Although aware of this, Sanada launches himself into their aid. Despite fighting valiantly, Iemitsu got the upper hand. Sasuke and Saizou both end up bloody and weakened greatly, causing Sanada to jump in front of a finishing blow that would have ended them. Sanada is thus impaled through his neck, and his Braves carry him off before Iemitsu can carry his attack out further. Unfortunately, Sanada isn't able to recover and dies while with his team in hiding.
Vessel: Chakri Kara - a chakram worn as a bracelet. Can be utilised as a weapon; thrown similar to a Frisbee.
Name Location: Under left ear on neck.
Power: Dimensional Manipulation - Can create an enclosure to seal off an area from other forces and interactions. This can be useful when something is causing excessive destruction to seal off the area so that it can't cause further harm to the surroundings. Alternatively, can allow the user to "hide" their presence in a dimensional enclosure, if injured or needing to escape from combat.
This can only cover a limited amount of area safely, about 20 feet squared. So massive forces that are larger than this may not be able to be enclosed, and if pressured to enclose it can damage the Shinki, or cause glitches in the dimensional seal that might cause further damages to the surrounding area.
